This week’s assignment is a bit tricky. Your task is to take pictures that could act as a news story, a picture that when accompanied by a caption, is the news story. Usually a news story is written separately, and sometimes all by the photographer.
But your assignment, is to create a photojournalist style, of three pictures, all involving the same subject. Because you don’t have access to a prop plane or helicopter, focus on the local interest type of subject matter. Do you have a friend on the basketball team? FBLA? Someone who has recently lost their job, anything that could be on the evening news, and school appropriate? Someone in a rock band, have them doing what they do, and then create a caption for it. Think of it as a documentary task, then add a caption to it. For examples, look at the picture above. It documents the twentieth anniversary of the Chernobyl Meltdown in the Ukraine. Notice how the picture, while it needs a caption to fully bring home its message, is able to capture an entire news story in one picture. Look at The New York Times, a well-respected newspaper and notice how many great images there are on the main page.
Don’t worry about writing the story, just take pictures, a set of three, and have them be all about one theme. Think if your picture appeared in the newspaper, along with the caption you wrote, would that be enough to tell a story?
