Introducing: Camera Raw

There is a built in Camera Raw Editor living inside of Photoshop the whole time.

Can you believe it? A whole new way (well sort of) to edit photos has been lurking underneath Photoshop’s skin for all this time now. We just didn’t know it was there.

Camera Raw is an uncompressed file format. The benefits of shooting in Raw are tremendous, not only do you have more control over exposure, fill light, brightness and contrast and so much more after you’ve taken the picture, but all the values of shadow, of highlights and hue and tint not to mention white balance are uncompressed, so its not too late to recover a picture.

Because these files are uncompressed, RAW Files are bigger: Each camera RAW file is between 7mb and 9mb, its up to five times as large as a normal. So, make sure you save to F: otherwise you’ll fill up your my documents in six photos.

RAW files are labeled (on Canon Cameras) .CR2  files. We are no longer working with .jpg anymore, we left that all behind in Photo One. You will still need to create .jpg photos to turn them in, but when we edit, we do it in RAW!! (Dinosaur sounding roar optional)

Want to see the editor in action? Of course you do. Open up Photoshop and go to File/Open As, and choose a .jpg file. Make sure to choose “Open As Camera Raw” from the drop down menu.

You will see something like this when you do open it.

Go ahead, give it a shot. There are tabs at the top to navigate through each part of the Camera Raw editor, and sliders galore!
