Photographer of the Day: Eileen Kennedy

All of these photos are from Eileen Kennedy’s Photo Series, “Beyond Success”

As she puts it:

Beyond Success is a photography series about the emotional transition of leaving a career, with its the familiar structures, community, and rewards. Like previous life changes, this one presents both loss and possibility. But there is now an urgency, as the years remaining begin to take on a finite aspect. And there is a sense of responsibility to find a worthy purpose on which to focus experience and accumulated knowledge.

My subject is my husband, a senior partner in a large law firm. He was fortunate– he found the work he loved early in life. But now, in his mid-sixties, he is expected to leave the firm to make way for younger lawyers. He faces the prospect of loss, but at the same time he welcomes the freedom to use his leadership in the service of larger goals, such as guiding the Free Library of Philadelphia as Chair of its Board of Trustees.

As an artist, my challenge has been to give visual expression to some of the emotions that attend a life change for which previous generations, not blessed with our expectations of longevity, have left few roadmaps. By mixing the documentary and the conceptual, the spontaneous and the staged, I use the details of one life to try to evoke the universal emotions of this moment and to suggest its evolution into the next phase.
